Dear Job Seeker/Career Changer:
You need accurate, up-to-date advice on how to search for and change jobs. You’ve come to the right place.
We are not HR specialists. So we do not have any vested interest in perpetuating the status quo. We are, instead, business people and job seekers, just like you, who have found that so much job search advice and career change advice just doesn’t work.
Sending out hundreds of resumes, networking, and interviewing are all good, fundamental steps in the process of job change. But, for most people they are grossly inadequate. Here’s why:
We are living in one of the most volatile times in all of recorded history. By this I am not talking about global wars or societal unrest, I am talking about jobs.
In the United States alone over 25 million people will change jobs this year. Nearly 2,000,000 jobs will be eliminated permanently, and as my friend Dan Pink wrote in his 2005 best seller, A Whole New Mind, "One out of 10 jobs in the US computer, software, information technology industry will move overseas in the next two years one in four of IT jobs will be offshore to buy 2010.
“According to Forrester Research, ‘at least 3.3 million white-collar jobs and $136 billion in wages will shift from the US to low-cost countries like India China and Russia by 2015.’
“Nations such as Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom will see similar job loss. United Kingdom alone will lose some 25,000 IT jobs and upwards of 30,000 finance positions to India and other developing nations in the next few years by 2015, Europe will lose 1.2 million jobs to offshore locales."
The reasons for these rapid and discontinuous changes are too numerous to mention. They include changes in demographics, advances in technology, and globalization, to name a few. But, one of the primary reasons, indeed perhaps the most significant reason is the fact that the Industrial Age is over and our economy is based upon the old Industrial Age rules that no longer apply.
We’ve all heard the definition of insanity as, “Doing the same things over and over again, and expecting different results.” The difficulties so many people are facing with job search, job change, and career change stem from the clash between the old, industrial age rules, and the new rules for the new economy.
In Creating the Future of Work, through interviews with hundreds of individuals in numerous fields and over 20 years study of thousands of articles and books, we have developed an understanding of what is happening and why, and most importantly what you can do about it.
The articles and perspectives put forth in Creating the Future of Work are not merely opinions, but great advice that, if taken as intended, will help you to gain career control and job satisfaction. You may find, as we have, that in taking control of your job search, using new job search tools , and a job search strategy , will not merely get you a job, but also give you back your life, as so many others have.
All the best to you and your future,
Christopher L. Hansen
