 2008 Job Forecast

Once again we are informing our clients and friends that the only job security that exists is in the area of jobs you create, whether that's self-employment or working for a company that recognizes and rewards your talents and strengths.

In essence the future of work is what you will make of it. Follow the strategies recommended on these pages, read and respond to our blog and take control of your job or career during 2008!

What is the future of work? To some this may sound like a foolish question, but I assure you it isn't. For great number of people, indeed the entire middle class, work defines their days, defines their lives, gives them purpose and meaning.

It wasn't long ago that work meant a job with fixed hours, fixed tasks, a 40-hour week, regular and increasing number of weeks of vacation, job security, and a pension as reward for a life's work.

Technology intervenes

Technology, specifically the computer, but also the fax machine and cell phone, the three pieces of technology we seem not to be able to live without and also seem to have the greatest amount of difficulty living with, has changed our work lives. Rather than shortening the workweek as many thought it would, we find many people working many more hours and enjoying work less. The pace of work on the job has increased—it's called increased productivity. The number of hours spent working has increased (more work to be done with fewer people). All this is fueled by advances in technology.

But how does one go about creating the future of work? Indeed, isn’t that the responsibility of someone with more power and authority than you and me?

Recent studies could not be more clear about this, the creating the future of work depends upon the individual discovering and using his/her God-given talents and strengths. Futurist John Naisbitt said in his decade old book, Global Paradox, that the bigger the global economy, the more significant are its smallest players.

Studies done by the Gallup Corporation of corporate managers and executives have shown that the key to success is the utilization of individual strengths. (Now, Discover Your Strengths, Donald Clifton and Marcus Buckingham, Free Press, New York, NY, 2001) But, while some corporate executives have taken the strengths theory to heart and are using it in their HR departments, few, if any individuals are being taught how to discover and utilize their strengths for career control and as a weapon against underemployment.
